They are migratory and spend most of the winter in Mexico. With 12 recognized subspecies, it ranges from southern Canada to northern Mexico, including most of the continental United States. The bobcat is an adaptable predator that inhabits wooded areas, as well as semidesert, urban edge, forest edges, and swampland environments.
It remains in some of its original range, but local populations are vulnerable to extirpation by coyotes and domestic animals. California Black Walnut. The main trunk can fork close to the ground, making it look like two trees that have grown together, then diverged. It has thick bark, deeply channeled or furrowed at maturity. It has large, pinnately compound leaves with lanceolate leaflets with toothed margins and no hair in the vein angles.
It has a small hard nut in a shallowly grooved, thick shell that is difficult to remove. California Buckwheat. Eriogonum fasciculatum. This common shrub is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, where it grows on scrubby slopes and in chaparral and dry washes in a number of habitats. It is the most important native source of honey in California, particularly attractive to numerous species of native bees and other pollinators.
This species is also an important food plant for numerous native butterflies. California Coffeeberry. Frangula californica. Frangula californica , commonly known as coffeeberry and California buckthorn, is a species of flowering plant in the family Rhamnaceae, the buckthorns. It is prized for use in native pant, water conserving, and wildlife gardens. It can be used in large containers, natural landscaping, habitat restoration projects and as erosion control.
